Ophelia, the well-known character from Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ was driven mad when her father was killed by her lover. She went to a garden and started singing weird songs. She fell in a pond, and drowned, singing. The Fate of Ophelia is another song (along with love story etc.) that shows Taylor’s obsession with giving Shakespearean characters, i.e. in her ‘Love Story’, Romeo actually gets Juliet and none of ’em die like in the actual story. Similarly, in ‘The Fate of Ophelia’, Ophelia (Taylor) is saved from her fate (Travis saved her heart from the fate of opheliaa). This song became No. 1 on Billboards Hot 100 in a SINGLE DAY and stayed for EIGHT WEEKS!
